Carriers, such as the steamship lines that carry your cargo can and do limit their liabilities to values, which are often significantly lower than the value of your cargo. The law only requires an insurable amount of $500 per package and $20 per kilogram if cargo is air shipment.

Cargo insurance could include such risk as theft, sea water damage, shortage, contamination, fire, explosion, jettison and loss overboard, general average sacrifice, general average contribution and salvage charges, and would depend on cargo that is being insured

Sellers need the assurance that they will get paid for the goods sold and buyers need to receive their goods in marketable condition.

You should be aware that, according to the terms on carrier's bill of lading, whether the cargo moves via air, ocean or land. The carriers liability is very limited, should there be any damage or loss.

Remember that if you're not using professional help to load your cargo you can only obtain (for obvious reasons) total loss cargo insurance.
